Teen Counsellor

Depending on how the life of a teenager or young adult is going, you may be searching for a “counsellor for teenagers”, rather than a teen life coach. However, the person you may want to talk with, is most likely the same or very similar.

Whether a young person appears to be “achieving” in life and is setting bigger goals, or they are “struggling”, they commonly still need a similar mentor. A good life coach or youth counsellor is not there to solve the problems or come up with the answers for a young person. There role is to hold the space, ask the right questions and help the teenager find their own answers.

What Is The Difference Between A Teen Counsellor and Teen Coach?

When it comes to some differences that may arise when providing a teenage counselling service, sessions might be more process driven. This is because there can be a need to take a look at past issues which may need to be resolved, as opposed to “here and now” and how do we achieve goals.

If you refer to the better health.vic.gov.au website, the definition of a counsellor is :

“they are a trained, objective, professional with whom you can build a healing trusting relationship. They are trained to offer different types of assistance; most frequently talking based styles of therapy. Counselling is a process of talking about and working through your personal problems with counsellor”.

Of all the definitions I can find on counselling- this is the one that aligns with my views of the service that I provide – the most accurately.

To become a certified youth counsellor (or any counsellor), you also need to complete a lot more training than that of a coach.

A teenage life coach, or a teenage counsellor, are similar because they both provide a place to:

  • find and create a better life
  • feel safe with no judgement
  • identify what might be holding you back
  • be held accountable
  • improve your relationships and career goals
  • help you reach your potential

Youth Counselling Service

One key difference when you meet with a youth counsellor, is that you may talk more about the way you feel, rather than the way you think.

Some topics which may be discussed with a teen counsellor could include human development, sexuality, depression, family dynamics, mental health issues and more.

I’m a long way from being a teenager now,  but I seem to remember quite clearly what this is like growing up and all the pressures that we go through. Relationships, fitting in studies, growing pains and physical changes, fitting in, drugs and alcohol. Then throw in today’s rather large issues of social media, cyber bullying, sexting, on screen addiction. It’s amazing (and disappointing!) there isn’t more counsellors out there focusing on teenagers and helping them grow up to be happy and strong individuals which day is it today.

The terms teen life coach and teen counsellor are used in quite an interchangeable way by many people. This is because of the similarities that both can provide.

Why Choose Me As A Teen Counsellor

If you choose to contact me, then you can rest assured that you will be able to access the best of both worlds. There is no need to be concerned about whether I can provide the service you are looking for, as I am both a youth coach and youth counsellor.

I help young people by talking through their individual situations, listening non-judgmentally to them and having confidence in them. My aim is to help them understand and work through whatever situations they are currently facing.

During our initial free consultation if I feel a client has needs that are beyond the level of knowledge and expertise which I have, I will let them know this and try and assist in providing a more suitable professional for them to do and see- such as a psychologist or GP.

I am a teenage counsellor on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. I can successfully work with you or your child as a youth counsellor online, in person, or over the phone.
